“with the heart of a lion/the mind of a fox/the color of the night sky” – Kaelum Poulson, “The Crow”

She is a black living thing: she feels her black-sleek feathers in the wind, she grips the branch bark with her two black feet, her dark, black eyes, staring out at the world, speak of death and midnight and feeding on carrion and raising hatchlings in a nest, black eyes that speak of circling above the ground, harrying a hawk or even an eagle for a stolen share of its kill, black eyes that speak of the changing of the seasons, the biting ice-rain of winter, the swelter-heat of summer, black eyes that speak of how a black body inhabits the universe and still makes sense of the trees, of the street, and of her breath on this Earth.
