Who am I, and why am I here?

Cafe-racerWelcome!

Why am I blogging?

I’m working on two long-ish (novel-novella) projects, but a few months ago I wanted to experiment with random ideas, characters, and topics that go beyond my two main projects.

Sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious, my blog posts have helped me learn about the boundaries of plot, have provided opportunities to exercise my imagination, and have helped me realize what skills and abilities I have in writing.

Who am I?

I am a writer who has been writing science fiction and literary novels and short stories for about twenty years. I have completed two novels – both unpublished as of yet – and a number of short stories, some of which have been published in small sf publications.

In my “other life,” I have a Ph.D. in Engineering, and I have taught statistics and decision analysis at the college level for the past few years.  I completed two novels that I have submitted and collected rejections on.  I have also written a number of short stories, some of which appeared in small publications.

A couple of years ago I decided I wanted to take my writing to the next level and to connect with a community of writers; after much research into writing programs, I began a graduate degree in creative writing through Goddard College.

What do I write?

My projects fall into two main categories:  i) I write relationships stories with a futuristic element, such as a man who marries a woman who turns into a boa constrictor at times, or a family whose daughter is a simulated human being and is eliminated by the mother of the family; and ii) I also write urban fairy tales, like a princess whose elf-staff is on strike or a fairy godmother who is on probation.

What should you expect from this blog?

Humor.  Irony.  Slices of fiction, slices of poetry.  Sketches.  Some science fiction or fantasy, some experimental work.

I follow The Daily Post’s prompts, but a prompt is a jumping-off point for whatever comes to mind as a creative writing piece.  My blog posts are fictive or poetic sketches, rather than narratives of my life or personal observations  – but I invite you to eavesdrop on my stream of sketches.
